I have experienced chronic back pain and sciatica/drop foot (right leg) since December 2019. I was working in the US and had an MRI scan there (which Addenbrooke's has transferred to my records) Early on I arranged physiotherapy, which was ineffective. Painkillers, prescribed by my GP, have also been ineffective. I have fallen in the street about once or twice a month and on one occasion broke my left wrist. Mr Laing was pessimistic about whether anything could be done about foot drop. My main concern, though, is my almost constant back pain at the base of my spine, usually just to its right. Lying or standing can be very painfuI (sitting down is usually better). I am anxious that this is not something I have to live with for the rest of my life. I want to be active, but the extent to which I can walk (without resting) and function normally is very limited. Mr Laing was critical about my weight, and was concerned about my blood pressure. He was pessimistic as to whether an operation would help. I am now following a diet and measure my own blood pressure regularly. I do not want consideration of my condition to stop here. I am depressed to think that it might.

It's been almost three weeks since my micro-discectomy and lumbar decompression surgery with Mr Laing. Delighted to report that, other than a little residual soreness and stiffness around the incision site, I am moving around normally and pain-free for the first time in almost a year and can see life opening up for me again. The only negatives for me were excruciating muscle spasms that freaked me for a few days post surgery (although Mr L rang to reassure me that it was just swelling and they would abate, which they did) and having to communicate via Zoom rather than in person. Really happy I chose Mr Laing. I am incredibly grateful for his skill and expertise. Absolutely brilliant surgeon. Thank you so much.

Mr Laing is quite simply put, wonderful, as is his secretary. Hes a gentleman who instills confidence just by speaking to him. He comes across as passionate about his work and you know that whatever the outcome of your consultation it will be solely with your best interest at heart. He takes the time to explain everything clearly in a non belittling way. If you need an honest appraisal about spinal surgery hes your man!

Mr. Laing was extremely professional with a great bedside manner. He installed in me confidence and reduced my anxiety about having my lower back decompression operation. His care and approach could not be improved upon.
